The police in Tien Giang Province said on July 10 that they had arrested 31-year-old Huang Shigang from China for illegally capturing people. His Vietnamese accomplices were Le Doan Thuy Tien, Nguyen Thi Tham Trinh, Truong Ngoc Thien and Vo Thanh Tai.

On June 29, Tran Thanh Dung told his wife that he would meet with a Chinese trader in Long An. On the same day, a stranger called her, saying that they had kidnapped Dung and demanded VND400m (USD17,300) for his release. The police quickly launched an investigation after receiving the report.

The abductors were arrested when Dung's wife went to the appointed cafe bar in Tan An City to pay the money. According to the abductors, Dung and Huang were partners in a dragon fruit trade and Dung owed VND350m to Huang. After meeting with him, they decided to keep him captive until they can collect the debt.

The police have seized a car, two motorbikes, VND117m (USD5,000) and other items. Huang was banned from leaving Vietnam for the investigation.
