Japan's public broadcaster NHK says that China, Japan and the RoK are in the final stage of arranging their trilateral summit for May 9th in Tokyo
NHK issued the report on April 8, quoting Japanese and Chinese government sources.
The last such meeting was held in South Korea three years ago. Japan, as the chair, has been trying to resume the talks.
If the summit is held, RoK President Moon Jae-in and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang are expected to visit Japan to attend the summit for the first time since they took office.
Japan's Kyodo News reported on the same day that Li is likely to make a three-day trip to Japan on May 9th.
Kyodo said that Li will attend the trilateral summit in Tokyo on May 9th before holding separate talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The two leaders are expected to conclude an official agreement on an emergency communications mechanism designed to prevent an accidental collision at sea or in the air.
Separately, the Japanese and Chinese governments are preparing to resume high-level economic dialogue for the first time in eight years later this month. The countries aim to promote better bilateral ties ahead of a three-way summit with RoK scheduled for May, the Nikkei reported on April 8.
The bilateral dialogue is to coincide with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's planned visit to Japan on April 15-16, and comes in the year of the 40th anniversary of the Japan-China Treaty of Peace and Friendship.
