The serious inundation in Hanoi

According to Phong, on May 29, Hanoi faced torrential rain with rainfall of more than 100mm, flooding many areas. Rainfall in Cau Giay reached up to 180mm.

The drainage system along To Lich, Lu, Set and Kim Nguu rivers spans a total area of 77.5 square kilometres to cover the eight districts of Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem, Dong Da, Hai Ba Trung, and Hoang Mai districts, and part of Tay Ho and Thanh Xuan. It is designed to drain at 70mm per hour only a maximum of 310mm over two days.

Meanwhile, Yen Nghia pumping station project with a capacity of 120 cubic metres per second has not yet been completed.

Director of the Hanoi Department of Construction Vo Nguyen Phong suggested prioritising the construction of a drainage system on Thang Long Avenue which often faces severe inundation during the rainy season.

Phong also recommended the construction of an underground rainwater reservoir in the Bat Dan-Duong Thanh area in Hoan Kiem District to deal with flooding. A similar reservoir which is located on Nguyen Khuyen Street in Dong Da District, has helped reduce the inundation of the street by 70 percent compared to 2020.
