Central Vietnam's longest sea-crossing bridge officially renamed

Hue City has officially named its nearly 2.4-kilometre sea-crossing Cua Thuan Bridge, following a public consultation that drew more than 8,400 votes.

The Hue People's Council approved the name at its fourth special session on November 4, during which councillors considered several important and urgent matters.

Previously known as the Thuan An sea-crossing bridge, the structure forms part of a coastal road and bridge project with first-phase investment exceeding VND 2.4 trillion (USD 92 million).

The entire route stretches more than 7.7 kilometres, including nearly 2.4 kilometres of bridge, making it the longest sea-crossing bridge in central Vietnam.

Construction has been completed and the route is now operational, improving transport links and supporting economic and social development in Hue.

According to the municipal People's Committee, officially naming the bridge will facilitate administrative management, improve public communication and highlight the area's geographical, historical and cultural identity.

In November 2025, city authorities initially proposed naming the structure Thuan An Bridge, after the nearby sea inlet. However, the name risked confusion with an existing Thuan An Bridge crossing Tam Giang Lagoon.

Two alternatives, Cua Thuan Bridge and Thai Duong Bridge, were subsequently proposed for public consultation.

Over nearly two months, more than 8,400 votes were recorded through Hue's smart city platform, Hue-S. Nearly 4,750 votes, or more than 56 per cent, supported Cua Thuan.

The People's Council's Culture and Social Affairs Committee said Cua Thuan was a shortened form of Thuan An sea inlet, reflecting the area's geographical identity, history and culture, as well as aspirations for peace and prosperity.

The city subsequently approved Cua Thuan as the bridge's official name.
