Six Vietnamese war remains recovered in Cambodia following local tips

A search team from Vietnam's Gia Lai Province has recovered the remains of six soldiers in Cambodia over five days, following information provided by local residents in three provinces.

On November 4, the Gia Lai Provincial Military Command announced that the remains had been found in Rattanakiri, Stung Treng and Preah Vihear provinces.

In Rattanakiri, a 52-year-old resident, identified as Seu Soen, shared information passed down by his late father. Between 1966 and 1969, his father had fought alongside Vietnamese troops and buried several soldiers killed in bombing raids near Ia Chut Stream.

Based on this account, the search team verified the information and recovered two sets of remains near the stream.

In Stung Treng, information provided by 67-year-old resident Deng Keo led to the discovery of two more sets of remains in Siem Pang District.

Keo recalled that in 1971, while fishing and setting traps for wild animals with another local man, who has since died, they came across wooden stakes arranged in a rectangle to mark a location. The site was about 400 metres northeast of the Se Kong River.

In Preah Vihear, another 67-year-old resident, Chay Ly, reported a location believed to contain the graves of Vietnamese soldiers.

While clearing forest for farmland, Ly had found two sunken patches of ground and pieces of green tarpaulin on the surface, near an area where Vietnamese troops had previously been stationed.

After learning that Vietnamese authorities were searching for fallen soldiers' remains, he contacted the team, helping it recover two sets of remains at the site.

Authorities said none of the six sets of remains had been identified, and all were incomplete.

The team also found numerous personal and military items, including rubber sandals, tarpaulins, hammocks, military boots, belts, buttons, a penicillin bottle, combs and other personal belongings.

Biological samples were collected from teeth and bones for identification and DNA testing.

The six sets of remains were recovered during the search operation from October 27 to 31. This brings the total number of Vietnamese soldiers' remains recovered in Cambodia between January 1, 2025 and October 31, 2026 to 34.
