K Hospital in Hanoi announced on November 2 that its doctors had operated on the patient to remove the tumour.

The woman was transferred from a lower-level medical facility to K Hospital on October 20 amid concerns that the tumour could rupture and cause internal bleeding. Her family said she had developed pain in the upper abdomen three days before admission.
Doctors found that the pain was persistent and dull rather than occurring in episodes. Following a consultation, the medical team agreed to perform a wedge resection of the stomach to remove the tumour.
Dr Kim Van Vu said treating a 100-year-old patient required careful assessment of the tumour, overall health and potential risks associated with anaesthesia, surgery and recovery.
The operation was performed by Vu and his team. During surgery, doctors found that the tumour had ruptured spontaneously, causing bleeding and fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity. They suctioned and washed the area before treating the affected tissue according to the planned procedure.
The patient's condition has since stabilised. She is able to walk, eat and resume daily activities.

Vu said advanced age was an important factor when choosing a treatment, but was not an absolute barrier to surgery. A comprehensive assessment and coordination between medical specialities can help determine the most appropriate approach and support effective treatment and safe recovery.
