More than 1 million Vietnamese couples face infertility

More than one million couples in Vietnam are affected by infertility, with the rate estimated at 7.7 per cent, according to figures released on October 31.

According to figures presented at the Fertility acadeMe Conference 2026 on October 31, of these 3.9 per cent experience primary infertility and 3.8 per cent secondary infertility. About half of infertile couples in Vietnam are under the age of 30. Secondary infertility is also a significant concern, affecting many families who have previously conceived.

Speaking at the conference, Nguyen Viet Tien, former Deputy Minister of Health and chairman of the Vietnam Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said rising infertility rates were a growing concern in countries around the world, including Vietnam.

Nguyen Viet Tien, former Deputy Minister of Health and chairman of the Vietnam Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology, speaks at the conference.

Tien said one of the main contributing factors was the growing trend towards later marriage and parenthood. Fertility can decline with age in both men and women, while medical conditions, infections, lifestyle choices and environmental factors can also affect reproductive health.

The cost of treatment remains another major burden for many families. Assisted reproduction often involves multiple consultations, tests and medical procedures, and success is not guaranteed in the first treatment cycle. As a result, many couples in Vietnam face both financial and psychological difficulties in pursuing fertility treatment.

Tien called for more practical government support, including subsidies for initial consultations and tests or partial coverage of the cost of the first treatment cycle.

Meanwhile, Vietnam continues to face challenges in maintaining its replacement fertility rate. The country's total fertility rate reached 1.93 children per woman in 2025, a slight increase from 1.91 in 2024 but still below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman.
