Two rare monkeys returned to wild in Nghe An

Two rare monkeys that wandered into a residential garden and damaged crops in Nghe An Province have been returned to the wild after a local resident alerted authorities.

Chau Binh Commune police, Quy Chau forest rangers and local authorities on October 31 jointly received and released the animals into their natural forest habitat.

The monkeys were discovered by Vy Van Ba, a resident of Pom Lau Village in Chau Binh Commune, after they entered his garden and damaged crops and fruit trees, disrupting his family's daily activities.

Ba reported the incident to local authorities, who arranged to inspect and take custody of the animals.

Officials identified one as a female rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), weighing 2.5 kilogrammes and measuring 70 centimetres long.

The other was a male stump-tailed macaque (Macaca arctoides), weighing 1.5 kilogrammes and measuring 40 centimetres long.

Both animals were found to be in good health and were released into the forest after the necessary procedures were completed.

According to Chau Binh Commune police, both species are listed under Group IIB of Vietnam's protected forest wildlife classification, which covers endangered, precious and rare animals subject to legal protection.

Police advised residents who encounter wild animals in residential areas to contact local authorities or forest rangers rather than approach, attack or attempt to capture them without appropriate safety measures.
