Long Thanh Airport expected to open at midnight on December 24

Long Thanh Airport is expected to begin operations at midnight on December 24, according to a notice issued by Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to the Dong Nai People's Committee on October 30.

As of October 9, 2026, Component Project 3 of Long Thanh Airport, for which ACV is the investor, had completed approximately 86 per cent of the construction work measured against contract value.

Of the project's 16 main construction packages, four have been completed, while contractors are working on the remaining 12 to meet the target for the airport's commercial launch.

According to assessments by specialised management authorities, most of the ongoing packages are expected to be completed in December 2026.

Under its initial operating plan, ACV expects Long Thanh Airport to handle up to around 366 flights a week, including 322 domestic and 44 international services.

The passenger terminal's western wing and central area will be prioritised for completion during the initial phase. Four check-in island groups will be arranged to serve both domestic and international flights.

Domestic airlines will gradually begin operations at the new airport. Vietnam Airlines is expected to operate the Long Thanh-Hanoi route and several international services, while Vietjet Air plans to run domestic routes connecting Long Thanh with major economic and tourism centres across the country.

To connect passengers travelling between HCM City and Long Thanh Airport, ACV has proposed priority transport routes, designated pick-up and drop-off points, and links with major transport hubs. Airport buses and shuttle services between airports could be considered for priority passage at key intersections and along main connecting routes.

Long Thanh Airport is being built in Long Thanh Ward, Dong Nai City, on an area of 5,000 hectares. The project has an estimated total investment of more than USD 16 billion and is divided into three phases.

The first phase has an investment of more than USD 5.4 billion and is designed to handle 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo a year.

Once all three phases are completed, the airport is expected to have an annual capacity of 100 million passengers and five million tonnes of cargo, with the ambition of becoming one of Southeast Asia's leading aviation hubs.
