Phu Quoc, Phu Cat airports set to open second runways

Phu Quoc International Airport and Phu Cat Airport are set to bring their second runways into operation on October 29, boosting flight capacity and supporting growing air travel demand.

The Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) said it had completed preparations for air navigation services at both airports, ensuring readiness for the new runways to enter service.

At Phu Quoc International Airport, the second runway is expected to increase capacity, support tourism and investment, and improve connectivity ahead of the APEC 2027 summit.

VATM conducted operational readiness assessments covering air traffic control systems, technical equipment, staffing, training and coordination procedures.

The assessments also examined potential safety risks, operational continuity and contingency measures. Any outstanding issues were reviewed before the runway's planned opening.

At Phu Cat Airport, preparations included checks of operational documents, equipment, air traffic controller training, meteorological services and safety monitoring arrangements.

As the airport handles both civilian and military flights, VATM placed particular emphasis on coordination between the two operations.

Officials stressed the need for clear communication on runway configurations, taxi routes and flight movements to prevent confusion when the new runway enters service.

VATM also conducted scenario-based exercises covering aircraft taxiing towards or approaching the wrong runway, as well as situations requiring the temporary closure of the new runway.

Air traffic controllers practised identifying potential hazards, confirming instructions and coordinating responses with military personnel and airport operators.

VATM said it would closely monitor initial operations to maintain safe and uninterrupted air traffic services.

The additional runways are expected to strengthen aviation infrastructure and support regional economic development, including preparations for APEC 2027 in Phu Quoc.
