Long Thanh airport plans up to 366 flights a week

Long Thanh International Airport is preparing to handle up to 366 flights a week in its initial phase as work intensifies ahead of its planned commercial opening in late 2026.

The airport is entering the final stages of preparation, with efforts focused on completing infrastructure, installing equipment, testing operational systems and training staff.

Initial flight plans take shape

Under the initial operating plan, Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) expects Long Thanh to handle up to 322 domestic and 44 international flights a week.

Vietnam Airlines is expected to operate services between Long Thanh and Hanoi, alongside several international routes. Vietjet Air plans to connect the new airport with major economic and tourism centres across the country.

Flight allocations are being coordinated among aviation regulators, airport operators and airlines, taking account of landing and take-off slots, the division of services between Long Thanh and Tan Son Nhat airports, and international aviation agreements.

Several international airlines have also expressed interest in operating at Long Thanh.

Key facilities are expected to complete acceptance inspections in November, while environmental, aviation security and staffing requirements are scheduled to be finalised in early December.

Authorities are also working to license airside vehicles, commission airport facilities and complete documentation for the airport operating certificate.

Publication of the aeronautical information needed for commercial operations is expected to be completed in December.

Operational trials under way

Authorities and ACV are conducting comprehensive operational readiness and airport transfer (ORAT) trials, using realistic scenarios to test infrastructure, equipment, procedures and staffing.

Any problems identified during the trials are being addressed before the airport opens.

In parallel, officials are accelerating inspections, regulatory approvals and specialist licensing to ensure the airport meets safety and operational requirements.

Preparations are also under way to deploy customs, immigration, quarantine and other government personnel from the start of commercial operations.

ACV is working with airlines on flight allocation, operational transition plans and staffing to ensure a smooth launch.

Over the longer term, Long Thanh's capacity will be expanded gradually in line with passenger demand and Vietnam's aviation development strategy.

Investment in regional transport links and aviation-related services is also being accelerated to improve access to the airport.

ACV said the project's focus had shifted from construction alone to comprehensive operational preparations, including certification, testing, staff training and coordination with airlines.

These measures are intended to ensure Long Thanh is ready to operate safely and efficiently as Vietnam's new international aviation gateway.
