Dantri/DTiNews readers support man after lower-leg amputation

Dantri/DTiNews readers and other donors have raised over VND 146 million (USD 5,600) for a man with an intellectual disability who lost part of his leg to diabetes complications.

Dantri/DTiNews Newspaper, in coordination with the National Hospital of Endocrinology's Social Work Department, recently presented a symbolic cheque for VND 126.59 million to the family of Trieu Huu Dung in Thai Nguyen Province.

The money was raised through Dantri's charity programme, while the Thien Tam Fund contributed a further VND 20 million, bringing the total to VND 146.59 million to help cover his medical expenses.

Dung's father, Trieu Duc Phu, born in 1962, expressed his gratitude to readers and donors for their generosity.

With the support, Dung has been fitted with a prosthetic leg and is gradually learning to walk again, although his mobility remains limited.

Dr Nguyen Ngoc Thien, deputy head of the hospital's Foot Care Department, said Dung was admitted with a fever, high blood sugar and severe foot necrosis and infection that threatened his life.

His condition required close medical monitoring and treatment.

Thien said Dung could now practise walking with his prosthetic leg and gradually resume daily activities, but still needed regular wound care, hygiene and continued treatment.

Doctors will reassess his condition and adjust the prosthesis once the wound has stabilised to support his recovery.

Dung's plight was previously highlighted in Dantri's charity section. Born with an intellectual disability, he is unable to work and depends on his family for daily care.

Diagnosed with diabetes in 2009, he could not receive regular treatment because of financial difficulties. When an ulcer developed on his foot, his family initially applied traditional herbal remedies, but the condition deteriorated, causing severe infection and tissue necrosis.

His parents borrowed money to cover his medical bills. The family has struggled financially for years, living in an old house and relying on a small plot of poor-quality farmland.

Dung's sister, who has congenital hearing and speech impairments, is also unable to work and requires regular care.

The donations have helped ease the family's financial burden and enabled Dung to continue treatment and rehabilitation.
