Dong Thap moves to boost sales of farm produce and Tet flowers

Dong Thap Province plans to help farmers sell over 336,500 tonnes of produce and 1.54 million Tet flower pots by early 2027 to ease oversupply and stabilise markets.

Under a plan issued by the provincial People's Committee, authorities will connect producers with distributors, wholesale markets, food processors and e-commerce platforms to secure outlets for major agricultural products.

The plan covers approximately 336,560 tonnes of produce, including fruit, rice and short-term crops, alongside 1.543 million flower pots expected to reach the market in January and February 2027.

Fruit accounts for 161,045 tonnes across 12,815 hectares, including 43,868 tonnes of dragon fruit, 29,691 tonnes of durian, 21,668 tonnes of jackfruit, 7,570 tonnes of mangoes, 7,765 tonnes of citrus fruit and 2,573 tonnes of longan.

Rice production requiring marketing support totals 154,980 tonnes across 22,401 hectares, mainly in My Qui, My Thanh, Tam Nong, Phuong Thinh, Long Dinh and Dong Son communes.

Another 20,536 tonnes of short-term crops grown on 1,190 hectares will also receive support. These include maize, lemongrass, chillies, lotus, taro and vegetables, primarily from Hong Ngu Ward and several surrounding communes.

For Tet flowers, authorities aim to facilitate sales of 1.543 million pots, mainly from Sa Dec Ward and My Phong Commune, during January and February 2027.

The province will prioritise products with large supplies but limited or unstable purchasing arrangements, seeking stronger links between farmers, cooperatives and businesses.

Separately, Dong Thap has outlined plans to expand its commercial infrastructure between 2026 and 2030, including 14 new supermarkets, eight shopping centres and 13 wholesale markets or agricultural trading centres.

It also plans to develop 210 traditional markets through new construction, relocation, expansion and renovation.

The province is piloting a 90-day cooperative transformation programme aimed at establishing 10 agricultural cooperatives linked to 10 organised production zones.

The initiative seeks to improve cooperative management, production planning and market access while strengthening agricultural supply chains.

Priority sectors include rice, mangoes, durian, jackfruit, pineapples, citrus fruit, lemongrass, vegetables and pangasius.

Authorities will assess the pilot results before considering wider implementation across the province.
