Haiphong orders repairs to deteriorating landmark building

Haiphong authorities have ordered repairs to the city's once-iconic Kite House exhibition centre, which has fallen into disrepair after years of neglect and damage from Typhoon Yagi in September 2024.

The municipal People's Committee has instructed the Department of Construction to work with Duong Kinh Ward authorities and relevant agencies to inspect the building and press its operator to carry out repairs.

The move follows media reports highlighting the deteriorating condition of the former architectural landmark.

Officials said repairs were needed to restore the building's appearance and ensure public safety.

The Department of Construction on September 29 met representatives of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Duong Kinh Ward and ACS Vietnam Joint Stock Company, which manages the property, to discuss maintenance and restoration.

Located at kilometre 10 of Pham Van Dong Road in Duong Kinh Ward, Kite House forms part of the 47-hectare Haiphong Cultural and Trade Exhibition Centre complex.

The main exhibition building features a permanent steel structure, with a ground-floor area of 10,000 square metres and a second floor covering 5,000 square metres.

Opened in May 2004, the complex was designed to host trade fairs, exhibitions, cultural and sporting events, and entertainment activities.

It initially attracted residents and hosted dozens of events, but activity gradually declined because of its distance from the city centre.

As operations became less effective, the building deteriorated and was at one point used for storage.

In 2025, the former Duong Kinh District authorities approved a plan to redevelop the exhibition centre site into a multifunctional urban area with public and service facilities.

However, little progress has been made, and the building continues to deteriorate.

According to the Department of Construction, many parts of the 22-year-old structure have received inadequate maintenance, while its roof and auxiliary facilities suffered further damage during Typhoon Yagi in September 2024.

On February 28, the department urged ACS Vietnam to accelerate repairs and restore the building to its pre-typhoon condition.

The company has yet to carry out the requested work.
