14 more sets of war remains found in Ho Chi Minh City park

Authorities have recovered 14 more sets of remains believed to belong to fallen soldiers, along with four sets of associated artefacts, at Le Thi Rieng Park in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Ho Chi Minh City Military Command said on the evening of October 19 that the remains and artefacts had been found during search operations earlier that day.

The teams excavated and processed more than 600 cubic metres of soil and expanded the search area within the park. To speed up the work, the command deployed three excavators, dump trucks and two 3.5-tonne trucks to support excavation and soil transport.

The latest discoveries bring the total number of sets of fallen soldiers’ remains recovered at Le Thi Rieng Park to 778.

Of these, 745 were recovered individually, while 33 were found at eight mass grave sites.

The search and recovery operation at Le Thi Rieng Park was launched on July 6 following the conclusion of Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra at a workshop verifying information about a mass grave of martyrs in the area.

Earlier, based on witness accounts and historical records, the Ho Chi Minh City Command estimated that hundreds of martyrs killed during the 1968 Tet Offensive and Uprising may have been buried in Do Thanh - Chi Hoa cemetery, now Le Thi Rieng Park.
