Paralysed widow recovers with help from Dantri/DTiNews readers

A widow in Cao Bang Province can now walk and care for herself after stroke treatment supported by VND 144 million (USD 5,500) in donations from Dantri/DTiNews readers and benefactors.

Trieu Mui Pham, 44, a member of the Dao ethnic minority in Thanh Cong Commune, has returned home after treatment at the National Hospital of Acupuncture.

Recent photographs shared by her family show her preparing vegetables, cooking and helping her son with light household chores.

Previously, Pham had been paralysed on her left side and struggled to speak following a stroke. She depended entirely on her son, Dang Kiem Nan, 25, for daily care.

Throughout her hospital stay, Nan helped his mother eat, bathe and exercise while encouraging her to continue treatment.

Her recovery has brought considerable relief to the family.

The newspaper, in cooperation with the National Hospital of Acupuncture, recently presented the family with a symbolic donation certificate for VND 114,776,436 raised by readers.

The money had already been transferred to Nan's bank account to help cover his mother's treatment.

He also received more than VND 30 million directly from other benefactors, bringing the family's total financial assistance to over VND 144 million.

Pham's plight was previously featured in a Dantri appeal after a stroke left her unable to walk and her son struggling to afford treatment.

Fourteen years ago, her husband and youngest son died in a flash flood. Pham and Nan survived, but the family was left in difficult financial circumstances.

Nan dropped out of school after fifth grade to help his mother farm and raise livestock.

The family later borrowed money from a bank to contribute towards building a house under a government programme to replace substandard housing and to develop their livestock business.

On April 19, shortly after the house was completed, Pham suffered a stroke while feeding pigs.

To pay for treatment, Nan sold three buffaloes and the family's pigs. The proceeds were soon exhausted, while the family still owed more than VND 200 million.

Following the newspapers' report, readers and benefactors contributed funds to help Pham continue treatment.

After months of care and rehabilitation, Pham gradually regained her mobility and was eventually discharged.

Nan thanked the hospital's doctors, social workers, Dantri/DTiNews readers and benefactors for helping his mother recover.

Nguyen Thi Lan, a social worker at the hospital, also expressed appreciation for the support given to Pham's family and other disadvantaged patients.
