To Tan Thi, director of the provincial Agriculture and Rural Development Project Management Board, said the pass opened on October 15 after its traffic safety systems were completed.

Located in Hoai Nhon Dong Ward, the route cost VND 204 billion (about USD 7.9 million). It has a 12-metre-wide asphalt surface and a design speed of 40km/h.
The former Lo Dieu Pass was about 3km long, with a road surface just 6.5 metres wide. Some sections had gradients of around 10 per cent, sharp bends and limited visibility. The route also lacked street lighting, while its rugged terrain made travel difficult.
The new road follows the coastline, with a wider surface and gentler gradients to improve traffic flow and safety. Beyond addressing the shortcomings of the old route, it offers distinctive coastal scenery, where rocky hills meet the blue sea.

The Lo Dieu Pass is part of the DT639 coastal road project, which spans more than 38km and has a total investment of about VND 1.3 trillion (about USD 50 million).
Construction began in May 2024, with the provincial Agriculture and Rural Development Project Management Board serving as the project investor.
