Heavy rain isolates villages, leaves woman missing in Quang Tri

Torrential rain and flooding have triggered landslides and cut off several villages in Quang Tri Province, while rescuers search for a woman swept away by floodwaters.

The provincial Civil Defence Command said on October 10 that prolonged downpours had damaged roads, irrigation systems and farmland, particularly in mountainous areas.

Ho Thi Lieu, born in 1976, was swept away by floodwaters at around 12.15 pm while travelling from the former K-ai Village area to Bai Dinh Village in Dan Hoa Commune. Rescue teams and local residents are searching for her.

In Truong Son Commune, five villages, including Doc May, Trung Son, Xuan Tien, Truong Lam and Ploang-Rin Rin, have been cut off by rising floodwaters and landslides.

A landslide blocked the emergency access road between Truong Ninh and Truong Son, while flooding submerged a bridge on the route to Trung Son Village by about one metre.

Several villages in Le Ninh Commune were also isolated, while four inter-village roads in Bac Trach Commune were flooded to depths of 40-60cm. Water reached one metre in some residential areas.

On National Highway 9C, around 10 cubic metres of soil and rocks fell onto the road, blocking vehicle access. Two low-water crossings on National Highway 9B were also submerged by about 50cm.

In Vinh Hoang Commune, flooding buried around one hectare of farmland, damaged 83 metres of irrigation canals and eroded several rural roads.

Storms also damaged coastal embankment structures, household electricity systems and walls at two homes.

Between 7 pm on October 9 and 1 pm on October 10, northern Quang Tri recorded rainfall of 90-250mm, with 282.4mm measured in Truong Xuan and 253.8mm in Van Ninh.

River levels continued to rise. At 4 pm on October 10, the Kien Giang River at Le Thuy station stood 0.22 metres above the second warning level, while the Gianh River at Dong Tam station was 0.63 metres above the first warning level.

Provincial authorities have mobilised rescue teams and equipment to assist isolated communities, inspect damaged roads and establish barriers at dangerous locations.

Local administrations have also been instructed to identify areas at risk of flash floods and landslides and prepare evacuation plans.
