Sea turtle lays 82 eggs on Lam Dong island

A green sea turtle has laid 82 eggs on Tau Beach at Hon Cau Island in Lam Dong Province, with conservation workers moving them to a protected nesting site.

A patrol team from the Hon Cau Marine Protected Area in Lien Huong Commune discovered tracks left by a female turtle on Tau Beach on the night of October 7.

When the team returned on the morning of October 8, they found that the turtle had laid 82 eggs.

After the mother turtle returned to the sea, conservation workers relocated all the eggs to a safer incubation site for monitoring.

According to the marine protected area's management board, sea turtles have nested six times this year across three beaches: Nhat, Tau and Ba Hon.

In the most recent previous nesting event, a female turtle laid 101 eggs in mid-September.

Green sea turtles are listed in Vietnam's Red Data Book. Their eggs typically hatch after 45-60 days, depending on temperature. Conservation workers will monitor the hatchlings and help them reach the sea.

The Hon Cau Marine Protected Area covers approximately 12,500 hectares, about 10 kilometres offshore. Its coral reefs and seagrass beds provide habitats and breeding grounds for numerous rare marine species.
