Coach Kim Sang Sik: "I apologise to Vietnam fans"

Vietnam coach Kim Sang Sik took full responsibility after his side lost 1-0 to Malaysia in the FIFA ASEAN Cup third-place play-off in Indonesia on October 5.

“First of all, I want to apologise to the fans in Vietnam. The weather was very hot today, but our older players gave everything they had. I am also very grateful to the Vietnamese supporters who travelled from so far away to follow and cheer for the team. Thank you for your support,” Kim said.

“This was the first FIFA ASEAN Cup and we did not win a medal. I feel very regretful and disappointed with the result. We did not have much time to prepare, while many players were not in 100 per cent physical condition. I understand that the fans may be disappointed with what the team showed.

“With this result, I take full responsibility. I am responsible for the team's performance. Looking ahead to 2027, we will prepare better for the Asian Cup and continue to communicate and connect with everyone. I hope the Vietnam team can achieve better results in that tournament.”

Kim also commented on referee Ko Hyung Jin's decision to overturn a penalty awarded to Vietnam in the 73rd minute after a VAR review.

“Overall, I think the referee's decisions today were fair and he did a good job.

“As for the penalty being overturned, I think it was unfortunate. But that is football and I respect the referee's decision. Regardless, I think Vietnam did not perform to the required standard today.”

Against Malaysia at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Indonesia, Vietnam made a strong start and enjoyed periods of pressure. Malaysia's defence, however, remained organised, while Vietnam failed to create clear-cut chances and the first half ended goalless.

Malaysia stepped up the pace after the break. In the 62nd minute, Fergus Tierney received the ball in central midfield, turned quickly and fired a shot through Viet Anh's legs towards the left side of the goal, leaving goalkeeper Le Giang Patrik unable to stop it and putting Malaysia 1-0 ahead.

Vietnam responded with sustained pressure, and controversy followed in the 73rd minute. After receiving a pass from Dinh Bac, Van Do entered the penalty area and was brought down by a Malaysian defender. Ko Hyung Jin initially pointed to the spot but overturned the decision after reviewing the incident on VAR.

Vietnam dominated the closing stages, but Thanh Long and Dinh Bac rushed their finishing as the team searched for an equaliser.

Vietnam ultimately lost 1-0 to Malaysia and missed out on a medal at the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.
