Hanoi pilots greenery on urban infrastructure

Hanoi is piloting greenery on elevated railway pillars, an underpass, a flyover and bus shelters as part of efforts to expand green space in densely built-up areas.

The Hanoi Department of Construction has asked relevant agencies to test greening models at three elevated railway pillars on Nguyen Trai Street, the Le Van Luong-To Huu underpass, the Le Van Luong-Lang Ha flyover and three bus shelters.

The pilot projects are under way and are expected to be completed around October 10.

For the railway pillars, steel trellises will be installed around the structures without drilling into them. Climbing plants will be grown from the base and trained up the frames, while access will be maintained for inspection and maintenance.

Plants will be regularly trimmed to prevent them from reaching bridge beams, technical equipment or other areas that could affect the structures' safety.

At the Le Van Luong-To Huu underpass, about 200 square metres of trellises are planned, along with improvements to existing planting areas. Modular planters will also be installed along about 300 metres of the underpass walls, with trailing plants kept at an initial length of two to three metres.

The plants will be maintained to ensure they do not obstruct traffic, lighting, signs or technical equipment.

At the three bus shelters, planters will be placed behind or alongside the structures without blocking pedestrian access. Lightweight frames and cables will support climbing plants along rear walls and parts of the roofs.

Hanoi has invested in trees, parks, flower gardens and urban landscaping in recent years. With public land increasingly limited, the city is looking to integrate greenery into existing infrastructure to make better use of urban space.

The city aims to treat trees and water bodies as core ecological infrastructure in its longer-term development strategy beyond 2030.
