Long Thanh airport to handle up to 366 flights a week initially

Long Thanh International Airport is expected to handle up to 366 flights a week during its initial operating phase, mainly on domestic and short-haul international routes.

Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) said on October 4 that it had drawn up a three-phase plan for passenger and cargo operations at the airport in Dong Nai City.

The first phase, from December 2026 to March 2027, will see the western wing and central section of the passenger terminal put into operation.

Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet have registered to use 6-10 per cent of the airport's designed capacity, equivalent to 20-30 flights a day. Weekly traffic is expected to reach up to 366 flights, including 322 domestic and 44 international services.

Part of the cargo terminal will also become operational, handling domestic cargo from December 24, 2026 and international cargo, except shipments to Europe and the United States, from January 2027.

In the second phase, from April to October 2027, the two airlines will expand international services to Europe, Australia, South Asia, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia and the Americas, as well as additional domestic routes.

Passenger traffic is expected to reach 50 per cent of designed capacity during this period. The entire cargo terminal will also undergo trial operations and assessments for certification to handle shipments to the European Union and the United States.

From October 2027, the airport is scheduled to enter its third phase and operate at full designed capacity, with a complete domestic and international network, including cargo services to Europe and the United States.

ACV said it was completing legal and operational procedures, with key licences and approvals expected in October and November.

The airport's first phase is scheduled to begin commercial operations by the end of 2026, with priority areas of the terminal undergoing trial operations in early October.
