More than 700 martyrs' remains found at HCM City park

Authorities have recovered 701 sets of war remains from Le Thi Rieng Park in Ho Chi Minh City, including 19 found on October 1.

The Ho Chi Minh City Military Command said on October 1 that search teams had recovered 19 additional sets of remains at Le Thi Rieng Park during the day, bringing the total found at the site to 701.

The teams processed more than 500 cubic metres of soil and expanded the search area. To speed up the work, the military command deployed three excavators, dump trucks and two other trucks to dig and transport soil.

Of the 701 sets recovered so far, 668 were found individually, while 33 were discovered at eight mass grave sites.

The search and recovery operation at Le Thi Rieng Park was launched on July 6 following the conclusion of Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra at a workshop verifying information about a mass grave of martyrs in the area.

Earlier, based on witness accounts and historical records, the Ho Chi Minh City Command estimated that hundreds of martyrs killed during the 1968 Tet Offensive and Uprising may have been buried in Do Thanh - Chi Hoa cemetery, now Le Thi Rieng Park.
