Authorities in Can Tho have approved the establishment of a 200-hectare High-Tech Park in O Mon Ward, aiming to capitalise on the global shift toward advanced technologies and strengthen the city's role as the economic hub of the Mekong Delta.
According to the project proposal, the High-Tech Park will require total investment of more than VND 5 trillion (USD 195 million). Compensation, land acquisition and resettlement costs account for over VND 2.6 trillion (USD 101.4 million).
Project funding will come from two main sources. The city government is expected to contribute about VND 1.437 trillion (USD 56 million), equivalent to 28.46 per cent of the total investment, primarily for land clearance and resettlement activities.
The remaining capital is expected to be mobilised through official development assistance (ODA), foreign direct investment (FDI) and private-sector funding.
The project will be implemented in two phases. Between 2026 and 2028, authorities will focus on unexploded ordnance clearance, land acquisition and resettlement. The second phase, from 2028 to 2030, will involve investment in technical infrastructure, including land preparation, transport networks, power supply, telecommunications systems and environmental treatment facilities.
During its initial development stage, the High-Tech Park will prioritise investment in five sectors: biotechnology, automation, advanced materials, energy technologies and post-harvest technologies.
The planned site is located about 18km from the city centre and is close to major research institutions and educational facilities, a factor officials believe will support innovation and workforce development.
According to the Can Tho People's Committee, the project is expected to supply advanced machinery, equipment and technology services for key industries, including agricultural machinery manufacturing, agricultural and seafood processing, and renewable energy development.
The park is also expected to attract approximately 15,000 highly skilled workers and leverage expertise from overseas Vietnamese professionals, universities and research institutes across the Mekong Delta region. Can Tho University is expected to play a central role in supporting research and human resource development.
City authorities said the High-Tech Park is intended to become a major centre for technological innovation in Can Tho while serving as a regional hub for science, technology and innovation, helping drive sustainable economic growth across the Mekong Delta.
