The Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, Dantri Newspaper and the Motor Vehicle Insurance Fund of the Insurance Association of Vietnam launched the 2026 Road Traffic Safety and Law Awareness Competition at an event in Hanoi on September 23.
The launch ceremony attracted students from universities across the capital.
Speaking ahead of the event, Colonel Nguyen Quang Nhat of the Traffic Police Department said the 2025 edition of the competition had drawn nearly one million participants nationwide.
“This year, the competition will be organised in both online and in-person formats,” Nhat said.
For the online contest, organisers will continue to include questions covering fundamental traffic regulations. The 2026 edition will also feature video footage of traffic collisions and violations, allowing participants to assess real-life situations, demonstrate their understanding of traffic laws and propose appropriate responses.
Addressing the launch ceremony, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Nguyen Thi Ha praised the initiative by the Traffic Police Department and other units under the Ministry of Public Security, as well as their cooperation with Dantri Newspaper in organising the event.
“This is a programme that I personally value highly,” Ha said.
She said road traffic order and safety directly affect every individual and family, noting that traffic regulations are not only tools of state management but also measures designed to protect people's safety, health and lives.
Colonel Pham Viet Cong, deputy director of the Traffic Police Department, said road safety remains an issue of special importance to society, with direct implications for public safety, property and the country's socio-economic development.
“The organising committee hopes the competition will spread the message that every road user can serve as an advocate for traffic safety, every act of legal compliance contributes to the community, and every safe journey reflects responsibility to oneself, one's family and society,” Cong said.
From the insurance sector's perspective, Pham Ngoc Son, secretary-general of the Insurance Association of Vietnam, said the competition would help people better understand traffic laws as well as compulsory motor vehicle liability insurance and the rights and obligations of parties involved in traffic accidents.
During the launch event, representatives of universities, academies and transport companies signed commitments to support awareness campaigns promoting the competition.
According to the organisers, the competition offers total prize money of VND 190 million (about USD 7,300). The awards include one first prize worth VND 20 million (USD 770), three second prizes worth VND 15 million (USD 580) each, five third prizes worth VND 10 million (USD 385) each and 15 consolation prizes worth VND 5 million (USD 190) each.
The competition is being held nationwide for the second consecutive year. Running from September to November, it combines online and in-person activities to help participants update their knowledge of traffic laws, discuss real-world situations and propose solutions to promote a safer and more civilised traffic environment.
