Hours of heavy rain left many streets in central Nghe An flooded on September 19, disrupting traffic and daily activities across the former Vinh City area.

Torrential rain swept across Nghe An Province on the morning of September 19, with persistent downpours causing widespread flooding in urban areas.

The rain began at around 7.30 am and continued unabated until at least 12.15 pm, with no sign of easing.

The prolonged rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems and left most major roads in the former Vinh City centre submerged, causing significant difficulties for motorists and residents.

Many streets were submerged under 40-50cm of water, making travel difficult for residents.

By about 11 am, rain was still lashing down, darkening the sky. Poor visibility and rising floodwater forced motorists to switch on their lights and slow down.

The An Duong Vuong Street in Truong Vinh Ward, Nghe An Province, was deeply flooded. Several vehicles broke down, forcing residents to push them through the inundated stretch.

At a house at the junction of An Duong Vuong and Tra Lan streets in Truong Vinh Ward, floodwater was on the verge of entering the property. The female homeowner used wooden planks, cardboard, water containers and plant pots to reinforce a barrier at the entrance. Even so, waves from passing vehicles continued to wash against the house.

Dinh Bat Tuy Street was flooded by nearly 40cm, with water threatening to enter homes, prompting Nguyen Hoai Duc to pry open a drain cover to help water drain away more quickly.

Thai Ba Linh, head of Truong Thi 1 residential cluster in Truong Vinh Ward, said the area was higher than surrounding neighbourhoods. However, exceptionally heavy rain lasting several hours had overwhelmed the drainage system, causing widespread localised flooding, with some spots under as much as half a metre of water.
