The Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said on September 16 that five homes in Lao Cai and four in Thanh Hoa had been damaged.
Another 1,550 homes in Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An were flooded.
Heavy rain also inundated roads leading to seven residential areas in Thanh Hoa's Thach Quang, Xuan Thai and Thanh Phong communes, affecting 613 households. In Hanoi, 120 households were affected by flooded access roads.
Essential supplies remained available and communications were operating normally in the affected areas. Thanh Hoa authorities evacuated 734 people from 191 households in areas at risk of natural disasters to safer locations.
The flooding also damaged or inundated 9,020 hectares of rice and other crops, including 161 hectares in Hanoi, 6,492 hectares in Ninh Binh, 1,080 hectares in Thanh Hoa and 1,287 hectares in Nghe An.
A landslide occurred on the river-facing slope of the left-bank Day River dyke in Ninh Binh, affecting an 18-metre section, with the slide measuring 0.5-1.8 metres in height.
Landslides caused traffic disruption at six locations along national highways 15C and 217. Local authorities are carrying out repairs and other measures to restore safe traffic conditions.
The disaster management department urged local authorities to closely monitor weather developments and step up preparations for heavy rain, flooding, flash floods and landslides, particularly in Phu Tho, Hung Yen, Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An.
From the evening of September 16 through the night of September 17, rainfall of 50-90mm is forecast for Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, Ninh Binh, Hanoi, Haiphong, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, with some areas expected to receive more than 200mm.
Lang Son, Haiphong, Quang Ninh and southern Son La are forecast to receive 30-50mm of rain, with more than 90mm possible in some areas.
