Heavy rainfall continued across parts of Nghe An Province on September 16, causing rivers and streams to rise rapidly and inundating residential areas, farmland and transport infrastructure.
Floodwaters from upstream areas swept into communities in Nghia Loc, Dong Hieu and Quynh Van communes, among others, leaving many neighbourhoods submerged.
In the mountainous commune of Nghia Loc, persistent rain since September 15 caused water levels to rise quickly and enter numerous homes. As floodwaters continued to increase, residents rushed to move furniture, household belongings and livestock to higher ground.
Local authorities deployed emergency personnel to assist affected households and support flood-response efforts.
Lai Van Duong, vice-chairman of the Nghia Loc Commune People's Committee, said the immediate priority was ensuring residents' safety while helping families relocate property, cattle and poultry from areas at risk of severe flooding.
According to local officials, field inspections carried out on September 16 found that large areas of rice paddies and other crops in the Nam Loc area had been almost completely destroyed by flooding. The heavy rain also caused significant damage to a number of local roads.
National Highway 48 through Dong Hieu Commune was submerged in several sections, with floodwaters exceeding one metre in depth in some locations. Authorities erected warning signs and restricted traffic through dangerous areas.
Floodwater entered many residential neighbourhoods in Dong Hieu, affecting hundreds of households. Water depths of between 0.5 and one metre were reported in some locations.
Nguyen Thi, a resident of Dong Hieu Commune, said some families were unable to move their belongings in time and suffered property losses, while livestock and poultry belonging to several households died as a result of the flooding.
