The market ceased operations on September 14 after inspections found that its fire prevention and firefighting facilities failed to meet safety requirements, according to the Kim Lien Ward People's Committee.
Opened in 1992, the market has long served as a shopping hub for local residents and a workplace for generations of traders. Its infrastructure has deteriorated after more than three decades of operation.
Hanoi's fire and rescue police inspected the market in May 2025 and identified a number of fire safety shortcomings, prompting its temporary closure for remedial work.
Since September 13, workers and trucks have been provided free of charge to help traders move their goods and belongings, with assistance continuing through September 16.
Electricity and water supplies to the market were cut off from noon on September 14, while deliveries of new goods were suspended. The market will remain closed until it meets fire safety requirements.
Local authorities stressed that the closure is temporary, with traders allowed to return once fire safety requirements are met and an operating plan is approved.
Located at 23 Luong Dinh Cua Street, Kim Lien Market covers about 1,655 square metres. It is also among Hanoi markets scheduled for renovation and upgrading during the 2026-2030 period, with work expected to be completed by January 2028.
