Rain had stopped in southern Quang Tri by midday on Monday and eased to scattered showers in northern areas, while water levels on most rivers had peaked and were receding, according to the provincial Civil Defence Command.
Floodwaters have receded in low-lying areas including Lao Bao, Dakrong and Ba Long, allowing evacuated residents to return home and begin clearing mud and debris.
Heavy rain flooded 321 homes in Lao Bao, particularly in Trieu Phuoc, Tan Phuoc, Vinh Dong and Tan Long villages, with water rising almost to rooftops in some low-lying areas, according to commune officials.
More than 350 police officers, militia members and local volunteers have been mobilised to clean public facilities, roads and schools and help residents recover from the floods.
More than 100 youth union members have also joined the clean-up, focusing on schools and households with vulnerable residents.
Schools in Lao Bao remain closed as strong currents continue at some bridges and flooded crossings. Teachers and staff are cleaning classrooms and rearranging furniture so students can return as soon as conditions are safe.
Clean-up and repair work is also under way in Dakrong, Ba Long and Nam Hai Lang, where soldiers, local officials and residents are clearing flood damage.
Landslides have blocked several roads across Quang Tri, while high water levels in rivers and streams continue to inundate some bridges and crossings in mountainous areas, cutting off access.
Authorities have also removed one of three barges swept by floodwaters into the My Chanh railway bridge in Nam Hai Lang. Parts of the remaining two barges have been cut away with specialised equipment as crews wait for suitable conditions to remove them.
The flooding followed widespread heavy rain linked to a tropical depression. Besides the 321 homes flooded in Lao Bao, 105 were inundated in Quang Tri Ward, 126 in Ba Long and 48 in Nam Hai Lang.
No deaths were reported, but nearly 350 hectares of rice and other crops were flooded or damaged across several areas of the province.
