All schools in the capital will provide core AI education to students from Grades 1 to 12, as well as continuing education learners, under a plan issued by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.
The move marks a shift from pilot programmes to citywide implementation.
AI content will be taught as separate modules within schools' two-session-a-day schedules rather than as a new subject. Students will not take separate periodic tests or receive separate grades for the modules.
The curriculum covers four main areas, including human-centred thinking, AI ethics, AI techniques and applications, and AI system design.
It aims to teach students not only how to use AI tools but also how to understand their responsibilities and use the technology safely and ethically.
Topics will include privacy, personal data protection, identifying fake content, accountability and responsible use of technology.
AI tools and platforms must meet eight mandatory criteria before being used in schools, while all educational institutions are required to adopt rules governing AI use.
The city prohibits the use of technology that identifies students in teaching, testing, assessment or classroom management.
Schools are also barred from uploading students' personal data, images, voices or academic results to platforms that have not been approved, or using such information to train AI models.
From lower secondary school, students using AI to help produce schoolwork must disclose how and to what extent the technology was used.
