Cold air set to bring cooler weather to northern Vietnam

Northern Vietnam is set for cooler weather from September 9 as a cold air mass brings rain, thunderstorms and temperatures below 19 degrees Celsius in some mountainous areas.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said on the evening of September 8 that a cold air system was moving southwards towards northern Vietnam.

Forecasters expect the system to begin affecting the northern mountainous areas of the region on the night of September 9 before expanding across the northeast, parts of the northwest and the north-central provinces.

Under the forecast, the northeast and north-central regions will experience noticeably cooler conditions from the night of September 9.

During this cold spell, minimum temperatures across northern Vietnam and the north-central region are expected to range from 21 to 24 degrees Celsius, while some mountainous areas could see temperatures drop below 19 degrees Celsius.

From the evening of September 9 through September 10, northern Vietnam is forecast to experience showers and scattered thunderstorms, with some areas likely to receive heavy rainfall.

In Hanoi, meteorologists expect cooler weather from the evening of September 9 through September 10, with locally heavy rain possible.

Looking further ahead, forecasters said that from around September 10 until the end of September 11, areas from Thanh Hoa to Hue, along with the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam, could experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Rainfall totals are forecast to range between 70mm and 150mm per event, with some locations receiving more than 250mm.

The weather agency warned that heavy rain in central Vietnam could persist and develop in complex ways, increasing the risk of localised flooding and other weather-related disruptions.
