Fishing boat with 21 fishermen towed to Phu Quy after engine failure

The Vietnam Coast Guard is towing a fishing boat carrying 21 fishermen to Phu Quy Special Zone after its main engine failed in rough seas off Lam Dong Province.

Fishing boat LD 95888-TS suffered main engine failure and lost manoeuvrability on September 7 while operating about 126 nautical miles east-northeast of Phu Quy, prompting a request for assistance.

At the time, southwest winds reached force 5-6 and waves were 3-4 metres high, posing a threat to those on board.

Coast Guard vessel 467 was dispatched to the scene and reached the fishing boat at 11.30 pm on September 7. Rough seas and high waves prevented rescuers from boarding the vessel.

The Coast Guard established contact with the fishermen, assessed the boat's condition and provided safety instructions before beginning the tow.

During the journey to Phu Quy, Coast Guard personnel have maintained regular contact with the fishing boat, monitored the fishermen's health and remained ready to respond to any emergencies.

All 21 fishermen are in stable condition. The vessels are expected to reach Phu Quy at around 4 am on September 9, when authorities will conduct health checks and help the boat owner address the engine failure.
