Aquaculture, particularly brackish-water shrimp farming, has continued to make a significant contribution to Vinh Long’s production output and export earnings this year. High-tech shrimp farming has emerged as a key growth driver, delivering strong returns for both farmers and businesses.
According to the Vinh Long Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province has stocked more than 65,000 hectares of black tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp, with total output approaching 163,000 tonnes.
Of that total, more than 6,300 hectares are dedicated to high-tech white-leg shrimp farming. Productivity ranges from 40 to 60 tonnes per hectare, generating more than 88,000 tonnes of output. This is four to five times higher than yields achieved through traditional farming methods.
Farmers can earn net profits of between VND 500 million and VND 700 million (USD 19,200-26,900) per hectare for each production cycle.
Pham Minh Truyen, deputy director of the Vinh Long Department of Agriculture and Environment, said the province is focusing on planning and investing in transport infrastructure and electricity networks to support high-tech shrimp farming zones.
“In the coming period, Vinh Long will prioritise completing infrastructure and attracting major investors with sufficient resources to develop both input supplies and market access for brackish-water shrimp products,” Truyen said.
The province is also introducing special policies, including land-use and credit support measures, to promote the sustainable and stable development of high-tech shrimp farming.
Vinh Long is currently seeking investment for four large-scale aquaculture projects covering more than 1,000 hectares, with a combined investment value of approximately VND 345 billion (USD 13.3 million). The projects are concentrated in key coastal areas.
At the same time, the province is calling for investment in a deep-processing shrimp plant with an annual capacity of 18,000 tonnes. The facility is expected to help local products gain direct access to major export markets, including China, Japan, the United States and Europe, strengthening the province’s seafood export value chain.
