Police in Xuan Huong-Dalat Ward, Lam Dong Province, said on Saturday that the man and residing in HCM City, had been fined for abusing the dog.
Lieutenant Colonel Ho Hai Duong, head of the ward police, said the penalty was imposed for beating and cruelly mistreating a domestic animal under a government decree on administrative penalties in animal husbandry.
Authorities also required the man to pledge not to repeat the offence.
A video circulating on social media showed a man repeatedly striking the Alaskan Malamute on the head with a hard object at Lam Vien Square.
The man was reportedly using the dog for a paid tourist photography service and beat it after it failed to follow his commands.
Police launched an investigation after receiving information about the incident and summoned him for questioning on September 3.
He admitted beating his dog because it had failed to follow his commands. He acknowledged that the abuse was wrong and had harmed Da Lat's tourism image, according to police.
A similar incident occurred in August 2024, when authorities dealt with two men who beat an Alaskan Malamute after it failed to follow commands while being used for paid tourist photographs.
Following that incident, authorities banned people from bringing pets to Lam Vien Square to provide commercial photography services.
