In Ben Hai Commune, strong waves and winds have steadily eroded the coastline, particularly around Trung Giang Beach, where the sea has encroached on a long-established casuarina forest.
Sections of concrete roads leading to the beach have collapsed, while mature casuarina and pandanus trees have been uprooted. Large waves have also washed rubbish ashore, worsening coastal pollution.
In late 2025, strong waves damaged a newly built embankment protecting Trung Giang Beach, breaking concrete structures and paving stones.
Local fisherman Tran Van Sy said the shoreline was 30-40 metres further out several decades ago. Continued erosion is eating away at land and protective forests, threatening infrastructure and residential areas further inland.
Gio Hai Beach in Cua Viet Commune has also faced persistent erosion. In late 2020, large waves severely damaged nine seaside homes and restaurants and eroded about 20 metres inland, damaging a coastal dyke.
Between 2024 and 2025, Quang Tri invested VND 160 billion (USD 6.1 million) in a nearly three-kilometre emergency seawall along the Gio Hai-Cua Viet coast.
In Trieu Co Commune, severe erosion has threatened local livelihoods, particularly around the fishing wharf, prompting local authorities to seek measures to protect residents and their livelihoods.
Quang Tri authorities have recently approved funding for disaster recovery and prevention projects, including VND 50 billion (USD 1.9 million) for emergency measures to tackle coastal erosion in Ben Hai and Nam Cua Viet communes.
