According to Hue Water Supply Joint Stock Company (HueWACO), its Thuy Yen mobile water treatment plant became fully operational late on August 29, providing 4,000 cubic metres of clean water a day, one day ahead of schedule.
The first treatment unit, with a capacity of 2,000 cubic metres a day, began operating at 8 pm, followed by a second unit of the same capacity at midnight.
HueWACO said the plant had significantly eased the shortage and was now largely meeting local demand.
"We were determined to restore domestic water supplies before the National Day holiday on September 2," HueWACO General Director Duong Quy Duong said.
Water from Thuy Yen Reservoir was tested before entering the distribution network, with all 30 indicators meeting national standards. Independent on-site tests by the Hue Centre for Disease Control also met requirements.
The shortage followed prolonged hot weather that sharply increased demand while reducing water levels in streams and other raw-water sources across Hue.
By late August, supplies from Bau Ghe and Khe Me in Chan May-Lang Co had fallen to about 6,120 cubic metres a day, 51 per cent below the licensed capacity of the Chan May Water Plant, and were continuing to decline.
Even with an additional 1,800 cubic metres a day from Thua Luu Quarry and water transferred from the Loc An Water Plant, supply remained about 34 per cent below demand, a shortfall of more than 4,000 cubic metres a day.
HueWACO surveyed the area on August 24 and proposed an emergency mobile treatment plant drawing water from Thuy Yen Reservoir, together with nearly 5 km of pipelines.
After receiving approval, the company mobilised more than 100 staff, engineers and workers to work around the clock to install pumping stations, treatment units and pipelines, allowing the new system to begin supplying clean water within days.
