The Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade (HUIT) introduced the service to give students, particularly those from other provinces, a secure place to leave their motorbikes while they are away.
Tran Nguyen Phuong, head of the university's security team, said fewer students were expected to use the service during the September 2 holiday than during the Lunar New Year because of the shorter break and because some students would remain in HCM City.
The initiative was first introduced during the 2026 Lunar New Year holiday after Phuong proposed the idea to the university. A total of 534 student motorbikes were left on campus free of charge during the break.
The university has since continued the service during public holidays, with no fixed limit on the number of motorbikes accepted.
The scheme is available only to HUIT students and covers petrol-powered motorbikes. Electric bicycles and electric motorbikes are not accepted.
Students can leave their motorbikes at the university before a holiday and collect them after returning to campus, according to arrangements made for each break.
Phuong said the initiative was intended to address concerns among students who might otherwise have to leave their motorbikes unattended at rented accommodation or pay for private parking while away.
During the holidays, security staff continue to patrol the campus and inspect parking areas, fire safety systems and parked vehicles.
Phuong added security staff also wanted to spend holidays with their families but had a responsibility to safeguard property entrusted to the university by students.
The programme has become one of the ways the university supports students during extended breaks, allowing those travelling home to do so without worrying about the security of their motorbikes.
