The locomotives were handed over at Yen Vien station in Hanoi on August 29 as part of an investment programme through 2030, according to Vietnam Railways (VNR).
The new units will gradually supplement and replace older locomotives nearing the end of their service life or with limited power. They are expected to improve train operations on the North-South railway, other domestic routes and international services.
The locomotives retain the basic configuration of the D19E model that has been in service in Vietnam for years. They are diesel-electric locomotives using AC-DC transmission, with a Co-Co wheel arrangement and six traction motors.
Each locomotive has a maximum speed of 120 kph, an operating weight of 81 tonnes and an axle load of 13.5 tonnes.
Drawing on its experience operating the existing D19E fleet, VNR asked the manufacturer to address shortcomings identified during service in Vietnam. The new locomotives feature more than 40 upgrades to equipment, materials, manufacturing technology, quality control and maintenance.
Among the key changes is a G300 computer control system replacing the ZY8000 platform used on existing locomotives. The new system reduces the number of intermediate components and integrates warnings and digital displays, making it easier for drivers and technicians to monitor equipment.
It can also record operational data, assist with diagnostics and provide information for maintenance and fault analysis.
The driver's cab has been reinforced, particularly at the front, to improve crash protection for the driver and control equipment. The control console has also been redesigned to improve visibility and ease of operation.
Other upgrades include an electrically heated windscreen, windscreen washers and modifications to seats, side doors, handrails and rear-view mirrors.
A screw-type air compressor replaces the previous system, helping reduce vibration and noise while ensuring a stable air supply to the braking system.
The traction motor and wheelset drive assembly has also been improved to reduce friction, leaks and wear and limit the effects of dust and water. The changes are designed to reduce maintenance requirements and make major repairs easier.
Air, braking and cooling-water pipes have been replaced with stainless-steel versions to improve corrosion resistance and reduce leaks. The air-conditioning system has also been redesigned as a single unit with a fresh-air intake.
Other changes to the cooling system and piping are intended to make inspection, removal and repairs easier.
VNR said the new locomotives would increase traction capacity while allowing the railway sector to adopt newer technologies and strengthen its maintenance and repair capabilities.
