Police in Tan Thuan Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, said on August 29 they had identified a taxi driver accused of overcharging a foreign tourist nearly VND 3 million (about USD 115) for a trip from Tan Son Nhat International Airport to a residential complex on Nguyen Van Linh Street.

Authorities summoned the driver for questioning and arranged for the money to be returned to the tourist.
The case attracted widespread attention after an Indonesian visitor posted on social media alleging that she had been charged an excessive fare for the journey.
According to her account, the driver demanded nearly VND 3 million (about USD 115) for a ride lasting around 30 minutes. When she questioned the amount, the driver allegedly shouted at her, locked the vehicle's doors and prevented her from leaving.
The tourist said she eventually handed over the money in order to get out of the taxi.
After receiving reports of the incident, Tan Thuan Ward police launched an investigation and invited the individuals involved to provide statements.
Following inquiries, officers identified the driver and clarified the circumstances surrounding the case. The tourist was subsequently refunded the money she had paid.
After receiving the refund, the Indonesian visitor posted a message on social media thanking Ho Chi Minh City police for their swift response and handling of the matter.
Police urged residents and visitors, particularly international tourists, to use reputable taxi operators and vehicles with clear identification markings. They also advised passengers to retain trip information, receipts and related documents whenever possible.
Authorities said anyone involved in a fare dispute or who suspects they have been charged unreasonably should remain calm and contact the relevant authorities for assistance and resolution in accordance with the law.
