The performance was staged at the end of a three-day tour of the former Ha Giang Province, now part of Tuyen Quang Province, as a farewell memento for the group.
Tour guide Do Quan, 24, suggested the tourists dance to 'Vietnam, My Homeland', a song by late Vietnamese composer Do Nhuan.
The seven tourists, five from Spain and two from Britain, readily agreed. With no props prepared and little time to practise, the group worked out a few simple moves and rehearsed three or four times.
Instead of traditional conical hats, they used the motorcycle helmets they had carried on their journey as props.
Their moves were far from polished or perfectly synchronised, but their enthusiasm and natural expressions gave the impromptu performance its charm.
Quan later posted a video of the dance on social media, where it quickly attracted about 2 million views and numerous comments.
He told that the tourists, all in their 20s, visited Ha Giang from August 19 to 21. It was their first trip to the mountainous area, with the itinerary taking them through Yen Minh and Dong Van before returning to Ha Giang.
Despite spending only three days together, Quan said the group had grown close during the journey. Even after a tiring trip, the tourists enthusiastically joined the farewell performance.
After returning home, Valeria, one of the group, thanked Quan for the memorable journey and said she was surprised and delighted to learn that their impromptu dance had gone viral in Vietnam.
According to Quan, the positive response had encouraged him to introduce more Vietnamese songs and dances to foreign visitors on future tours.
Born and raised in Ha Giang, Quan began working as a tour guide about 18 months ago. His work gives him opportunities to introduce visitors to the region's landscapes, culture and local life.
The former Ha Giang Province received more than 3.28 million visitors in 2024, including about 380,000 international arrivals, up nearly 9 per cent from 2023. Tourism revenue was estimated at nearly VND 8.2 trillion (USD 312 million).
In the first half of 2025, it welcomed more than 1.7 million visitors, including nearly 300,000 international arrivals, generating more than VND 4.6 trillion in tourism revenue.
Following the merger of Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang, the expanded Tuyen Quang Province received more than 2.44 million visitors in the first seven months of this year, including about 464,000 international arrivals.
The five-day National Day holiday from August 29 to September 2 is expected to provide another boost to tourism. As of August 27, accommodation bookings across the province had topped 80 per cent.
Local tourism authorities said they would step up checks on service quality and price listings while taking measures to ensure visitor safety amid the risk of heavy rain and landslides.
