Most tourists leave Cat Ba by cable car as storm approaches

Most tourists have left Cat Ba Island for the mainland by cable car as authorities step up precautions ahead of Storm Narra.

According to Cat Hai Special Zone's authorities, visitors had been assisted with travel arrangements to ensure safety and order. Most of those remaining on Cat Ba, mainly foreign tourists, had chosen to stay on the island.

As of 5 pm on August 22, 1,705 tourists, including 257 foreigners, remained on Cat Ba. The Dong Bai-Cai Vieng ferry service has been suspended due to the storm.

Local authorities have kept visitors updated on weather conditions and advised them to make accommodation arrangements and take safety precautions.

Accommodation providers and tourism businesses have also been asked to coordinate with authorities, provide timely storm updates and help minimise disruption and additional costs for visitors.

Cat Hai has activated storm response measures, maintained round-the-clock emergency duty and directed vessels to safe shelters.

All 805 vessels carrying 2,095 crew members had been accounted for as of 5 pm on August 22, with 673 local vessels and 132 from other areas safely moored. Tourist boats, ferries and smaller passenger boats had ceased operations.

Rescue personnel and equipment remain on standby.
