Floodwaters inundate Lang Son after heavy rain

Heavy rain flooded parts of Lang Son Province overnight, inundating a major market and prompting police to help more than 200 traders move goods to safety.

Heavy rain from late Friday into early Saturday caused flooding, landslides and fallen trees across the northern province, disrupting traffic in several areas.

Gieng Vuong Market in Ky Lua Ward, one of the largest wholesale markets in central Lang Son, was among the worst affected, with floodwaters reaching nearly one metre in some areas.

Lang Son Police deployed nearly 100 officers, two motorboats, two inflatable boats and rescue equipment to help more than 200 traders move goods and other property from flooded stalls. Two injured residents were also given first aid and taken to safety.

Police said most of the traders’ goods had since been moved to safe areas.

The Lang Son Hydro-Meteorological Station forecast widespread moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms on Saturday due to the influence of a tropical convergence zone linked Storm Narra.

Rainfall of 40-100 mm was forecast across the province, with more than 150 mm possible in some areas, raising the risk of further flooding in low-lying and urban areas as well as flash floods and landslides on slopes.

Provincial authorities have ordered local officials to inspect flooded and landslide-prone areas and identify households that may need to be evacuated from areas at risk of flash floods, landslides and deep flooding.
