HCM City boosts bus, metro services for National Day

HCM City expects a surge in bus and metro passengers during the National Day holiday, with additional services planned to meet demand.

Public transport demand is expected to rise, particularly in the city centre, at major transport hubs and around festival venues, according to the municipal Department of Construction.

Metro Line 1, linking Ben Thanh and Suoi Tien, is forecast to carry an average of 80,995 passengers a day during the five-day holiday, up 5 per cent from the same period last year.

The line is scheduled to operate 1,320 services over the holiday, with more trains and longer operating hours planned to accommodate increased demand in central areas.

On September 2, the metro will operate 264 services and offer free rides to passengers.

Bus ridership is projected to rise by nearly 30 per cent from last year's holiday to around 280,000 passengers a day.

The city's 156 bus routes, including 109 subsidised and 47 non-subsidised services, are expected to operate 19,245 trips a day, up 8 per cent year on year.

Passenger demand on bus routes serving Tan Son Nhat International Airport is also expected to increase. The Public Transport Management Centre will monitor demand and adjust services on routes 103, 109, 152, 72-1 and 72-2 accordingly.

Routes serving interprovincial bus stations are expected to see higher demand before and after the holiday. An additional 447 trips are planned on routes 13, 94, 171, 61-3 and 61-8.

Five suburban bus routes will also have their schedules adjusted, adding about 280 trips during the holiday.

Meanwhile, ridership on Water Bus Route 1 is forecast to rise 32 per cent year on year to about 5,000 passengers a day.

Demand for public bicycles is also expected to increase in central areas, particularly around major event venues. Operators will redistribute bicycles around Ben Thanh and Municipal Theatre metro stations to meet passenger demand.

The municipal Department of Construction has asked transport operators to closely monitor passenger flows and adjust bus and metro schedules around festival venues, bus terminals, railway stations and airports to ease congestion.

Additional staff will be deployed at busy metro stations to manage passenger flows and respond to incidents during peak periods.

Bus stations, transport hubs, metro stations and bus stops will also be cleaned and upgraded to ensure smooth services throughout the National Day holiday.
