Ninh Binh halts mine blasting after boulders hit home

Ninh Binh authorities have ordered a mining company to suspend the use of explosives after large boulders rolled down Mai Mountain and severely damaged a local home.

The provincial Department of Industry and Trade has asked the Construction Investment and Trading JSC to immediately survey and map the mine to determine the locations of blasting and the landslide.

The company must also work with relevant agencies to establish the cause of the incident, determine responsibility and damage, and agree on compensation and repairs.

The department ordered the company to stop using explosives until the incident has been fully resolved and to retain all records relating to its use of explosives for inspection by authorities.

The firm was also instructed to remove unstable and overhanging rocks in the mine and strengthen security at its explosives storage facility.

At around 11.05 am on August 10, residents in Trung Son Ward heard a loud explosion and felt vibrations coming from the Mai Mountain mine operated by the company. A landslide followed, sending rocks tumbling towards the home of resident Dinh Thi Lua.

No one was injured, but the incident severely damaged the structural and architectural elements of Lua's 3.5-storey house, as well as its swimming pool area, balcony, fence, garden and water tank. Nearby forest trees were also damaged.

Trung Son Ward authorities have asked the Ninh Binh Department of Agriculture and Environment to conduct a geological survey of Mai Mountain and assess the risk of further rockfalls to ensure the safety of nearby residents.

They have also requested inspections of the company's mining operations, land use and environmental protection practices.

Ninh Binh Police have been asked to investigate the cause of the landslide and determine whether there were any violations of regulations on occupational safety, environmental and natural resource management, or the use of industrial explosives.
