Hanoi warns transport operators against holiday fare hikes

Hanoi has ordered passenger transport operators not to raise fares without approval as it prepares for increased travel demand during the five-day National Day holiday.

The city's Department of Construction has asked major bus stations, Hanoi Railway Station and transport hubs to arrange additional vehicles during peak periods to handle increased passenger numbers.

Operators must not cancel scheduled services for charter trips or impose unauthorised surcharges or fare hikes during the holiday.

Transport companies are encouraged to work with bus stations to offer online ticket sales to reduce crowding.

Vehicles must undergo safety checks before departure, while overloaded buses and those carrying prohibited or flammable goods will not be allowed to operate. Drivers and staff found using alcohol or stimulants while on duty will face penalties.

Bus operators have been asked to deploy standby vehicles at stations and transport hubs, while taxi firms must ensure sufficient vehicles and drivers, display fares and avoid unauthorised fare hikes.

The department has asked city police to step up patrols and enforcement against passenger transport violations and unauthorised roadside pick-up points.

Traffic management will focus on railway and bus stations, access roads to the elevated Ring Road 3 and major gateways into the capital, where congestion is expected during the holiday.

The National Day break will run for five days from August 29 to September 2. Hanoi Bus Station Joint Stock Company plans to deploy 500 additional buses to meet demand, including 200 at Giap Bat Bus Station, 100 at Gia Lam and 200 at My Dinh.

Pham Manh Hung, director of the company, said additional buses would be deployed based on actual passenger numbers, occupancy rates and capacity on individual routes to avoid disrupting regular schedules.
