Former Palestinian ambassador undergoes knee surgery in Vietnam

At 65, the former ambassador injured his right knee in the accident. After more than two months of ongoing pain that affected his mobility and daily activities, he decided to seek treatment in Vietnam.

Following an examination and assessment of his knee, doctors at Viet Duc University Hospital diagnosed a torn medial meniscus in his right knee.

After being advised about the extent of the injury and treatment options, he chose to undergo surgery at the hospital. The medical team opted for arthroscopic surgery to treat the meniscus injury.

Assoc Prof Nguyen Manh Khanh, chairman of the Vietnam Orthopaedic Association, and deputy director of Viet Duc University Hospital, said knee arthroscopy allows doctors to directly examine structures inside the joint, assess injuries and treat them accordingly.

The procedure was completed in a short time.

After the operation, the patient was conscious and in stable condition. He was able to sit up and begin exercising his knee on the same day.

The former ambassador said his ties with Vietnam dated back several decades. He first learned about Viet Duc University Hospital in the 1980s, when he came to Vietnam as a Palestinian student.

“Even then, I knew it was one of Vietnam’s leading central hospitals, bringing together many highly skilled specialists and doctors,” he said. “After many years of close ties with Vietnam, I have continued to follow the development of the country’s healthcare sector, particularly Viet Duc University Hospital.”

After the operation, he thanked Associate Professor Nguyen Manh Khanh and the hospital’s medical staff for their care and support throughout his treatment.

“I will always remember the doctors’ and medical staff’s care and attention. You created a comfortable environment and atmosphere for me throughout my treatment at Viet Duc University Hospital,” he said.

The patient will continue to be monitored and undergo rehabilitation exercises to restore function in his knee.
