Northern region to see thunderstorms from Friday afternoon

After days of heat, northern Vietnam will see scattered showers and thunderstorms on the afternoon and night of August 14, with heavy rain in places.

The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting said that on August 13, the northern region, excluding the northeast, areas from Thanh Hoa to Danang, the eastern parts of provinces from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak, and Khanh Hoa faced hot to severely hot weather. Maximum temperatures ranged from 35 to 38 degrees Celsius, with some places exceeding 39 degrees Celsius.

On August 14, some provinces including Son La, Lao Cai, Phu Tho and Tuyen Quang are forecast to continue experiencing hot weather, with maximum temperatures of 35-36 degrees Celsius, and above 36 degrees Celsius in some places.

The weather agency said that from the afternoon and night of August 14, the northern region, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, the Central Highlands and southern region would see scattered showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall is forecast at 10-30mm, with heavy localised downpours of more than 70mm in some areas.

According to the forecast, areas from Thanh Hoa to Hue and the south-central coastal region will continue to experience hot weather in the coming days, with severe heat in some places. Maximum temperatures are expected to range from 35 to 37 degrees Celsius, with some places above 37 degrees Celsius. The widespread heat across central Vietnam is likely to last until August 18.
