The project, scheduled for 2026-2029, will be funded from the provincial budget under the 2026-2030 medium-term public investment programme.
The reservoirs are located in Hien Luong, Tu Vu, Van Lang, Dan Thuong, Yen Son, Doan Hung, Xuan Dai and Lai Dong communes.
Work will focus on repairing damaged infrastructure, including cracks and seepage in dams, reinforcing dam slopes and repairing or replacing spillways, water intake structures and irrigation canals.
Some reservoirs will also be equipped with monitoring and early-warning systems for emergencies, while access roads used for management and disaster response will be upgraded.
Dozens of kilometres of irrigation canals will be renovated, including about 5.7 km at Ham Ky Reservoir, 4.85 km at Phuong Mao, 2.5 km at Nui Chua and 1.2 km at Suoi Dung.
Once completed, the upgraded reservoirs are expected to provide reliable irrigation for about 1,839 hectares of farmland, while improving water storage, regulation and distribution.
The project also aims to improve dam safety and protect downstream areas. New monitoring and warning systems will help track water levels, identify potential risks early and improve emergency response.
The province also plans to protect reservoir areas from encroachment and illegal use while conserving water resources and surrounding ecosystems.
Reservoirs with suitable conditions may also be used for aquaculture, landscaping and other purposes to support local economic development.
The Phu Tho regional project management board has been tasked with carrying out the project in accordance with public investment and construction regulations.
