HCM City ward proposes turning former school sites into parks

Two former school sites in HCM City's Chanh Hiep Ward could be converted into public parks under a proposal to reuse surplus public properties following administrative restructuring.

A survey team on August 12 inspected four public properties, including the former premises of Tuong Binh Hiep Health Station, Rang Dong Kindergarten, Kim Dong Primary School and Tuong Binh Hiep Primary School.

The team later met relevant agencies to review the current condition, legal status and potential uses of the properties.

According to Chanh Hiep Ward's Economic, Infrastructure and Urban Affairs Division, the former Tuong Binh Hiep Health Station, located within the ward administration compound, could be considered for conversion into a meeting hall.

The former Kim Dong Primary School, meanwhile, has been proposed as a potential office for the ward's construction investment project management unit.

The Rang Dong Kindergarten and Tuong Binh Hiep Primary School sites have been proposed for conversion into parks, creating public spaces for recreation and community activities.

Nguyen Thi Ngoc Thao, head of the Inspection Commission of the Chanh Hiep Ward Party Committee, asked agencies managing the properties to review their boundaries and areas and ensure the former premises are properly maintained.

She said the reuse of surplus public properties should comply with regulations and be aligned with urban planning, development priorities and local needs.

Proposed conversions will require further reviews of their legal basis and feasibility, as well as completion of the necessary procedures before implementation.

Chanh Hiep Ward was formed through the merger of Dinh Hoa and Tuong Binh Hiep wards and parts of Chanh My and Hiep An wards in the former Binh Duong Province.

Located in northern HCM City, the ward covers 19.664 square kilometres and has a population of around 59,500.
